Ionia Middle School Bands

The band program at Ionia Middle School offers several performing ensembles for students at a variety of different performing levels and interests.

Beginning Band                                                                                                                            

The main goal of this critical year is for the student to develop excellent playing habits in the areas of tone, articulation, posture, and proper rehearsal demeanor. Except for performing at Middle School Band Concerts in December and May, there are no after school group commitments for beginning band members. Outside of the school day practicing, however, is a must for the student to begin to develop their full potential on their instrument.    

7th Grade Band                                                                                                           

Students in this ensemble perform music at the typical middle school level and instruction is tailored to their abilities. The main focus of this ensemble is for the students to develop technique and to continue to grow in the areas of tone, articulation, and musicianship.  Seventh Grade Band members perform 3 evening concerts per year in December, February and May. The ensemble also participates in the MSBOA District Band Festival in late February and in the Memorial Day Parade in Ionia.                                                                                

8th Grade Band                                                                                                                    

Students in this ensemble perform music at an advanced level for middle school and instruction is tailored to their abilities. The main focus for this ensemble is for the students to develop technique and to continue to grow in the areas of tone, articulation, and musicianship. The 8^th Grade Band also performs at 3 concerts per year in December, February and May, participates in the MSBOA District Band Festival and Memorial Day Parade in Ionia.                                                                                                                       

Other opportunities for 7^th and 8^th Grade Band Students include auditioning for All-State Band and participating in the MSBOA District 10 Solo and Ensemble Festival.                                   

Jazz Band                                                                                                                              

The Jazz Band is comprised of students in the 7^th and 8^th grade band.   Students must have had at least one year of performing experience. In addition, a student must be in a curricular band class to be in the jazz band. The group meets Tuesday and Thursday after school in the band room from 2:45-3:30. The students in this group perform music in swing, latin, rock, and pop styles and learn the basics of improvisation.  The ensemble is welcome to students who play alto, tenor, baritone sax, trumpet and trombone.  See Mr. Brill or Mr. Beyer if you are interested in becoming a member of the group.
