ELA Course Overview
This one-year course involves critical reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening
skills. The course utilizes a variety of literature and informational text of steadily
increasing complexity throughout the year. Teachers employ a variety of strategies such
as close reading, writing, class discussions, and presentations to deepen their ability to
independently write, analyze, evaluate, and critique text. Students use technology to
enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use.

HMH Collections is a Secondary English Language Arts online curriculum resource for
grades 6-12. This digital resource provides all secondary ELA teachers with valuable
resources to support students in becoming successful in meeting the rigorous Michigan
Standards for English Language Arts.

Independent Reading Expectations/Summer Reading Resource Link
This one-year course also expects students to be involved with reading novels of their
choice inside and outside of school. All 6th,7th,and 8th grade students are expected to
read books over the summer and carry on this behavior during the school year.
